From Executive Director Cynthia Parker
As
I reflect
back on 2007, I’m amazed at all that has been accomplished by this
organization! This year alone, more than 400 acres of land was preserved,
bringing the total number of acres preserved and protected by The Land Trust
to nearly 5,000! As we continue to celebrate our 20th Anniversary through
June of 2008, we want to take the time to most sincerely thank everyone who
had a hand in the beginning of The
Land Trust as well as those who have continued to contribute to the success
– land donors, members, volunteers, board members,
staff, the cities of Huntsville and Madison.
The Land Trust began utilizing another tool for land preservation during
2007 – Conservation Easements.
This method of land preservation is widely used throughout the nation and we
are excited about the opportunities that this new tool offers for land
owners. A Conservation Easement (CE) allows the land owner to maintain
ownership and use of their land while permanently restricting their land
from any future development and keeping the land in its current state. As
the stewards of CE’s, it is our obligation and responsibility to ensure that
the restrictions are always upheld. And, as with most charitable
contributions, tax benefits are available to the land owner with the
donation of a CE.
There is a lot of excitement and momentum here at The Land Trust of
Huntsville & North Alabama – be sure to watch for ongoing news about land
preservation in North Alabama, new educational program offerings, a brand
new website with expanded trail maps, and our great special events! Stop by
our office at 907 Franklin for more information about anything you’ve read
here – or call us 534-5263 – our members and supporters are the BEST thing
about our jobs!
I look forward to seeing you out on the trails!
